Epi-LASIK is a new type of laser eye surgery and is certainly the most advanced. Combining the best elements of Lasek, LASIK and PRK laser procedures, this procedure is done by separating the epithelial tissue from the cornea using an epikeratome instead of slicing into the cornea to produce a hinged flap, as is done in LASIK surgery.
Epi-LASIK is not different from other laser eye surgery techniques. A laser beam is also used to reshape the cornea and is most effective for people that have mild to moderate farsightedness, nearsightedness or astigmatism. It is also very effective for people that do have a thin cornea.
Epi-LASIK is cutting edge and it does offer some advantages over the earlier types of laser eye surgery. Its main advantage over LASIK surgery is that the cornea is not cut; only a thin layer of the epithelial is lifted. This means recovery time is much faster and the vision returns to normal faster. As the cornea is left intact, the risk of infection is minimized. It is also relatively less painful. As with any surgery, there are risks involved, but the risks are minimal with proper testing.
Epi LASIK is a quick procedure and can be completed in less than 10 minutes. Anesthetic drops are applied to the eyes to minimize discomfort or pain. It’s important that the eye remains stable during the procedure. As soon as the anesthesia has taken effect, the epithelium separator passes across the eye. The epithelial is not removed but it remains attached in the middle. It is moved aside with a small, spatula-like tool.
By the use of laser, the excess tissue from the cornea is removed. The laser is then used to remove excess tissue from the cornea. It reshapes the cornea to its correct dimensions. Finally, antibiotic drops are applied and a bandage similar to a contact lens is then inserted to protect the eye against infection.
Generally, patients can resume with their normal activities the next day after the Epi LASIK surgery. It is a must that you attend the follow up check up with the LASIK doctor to confirm that the eye is healing well and your vision is normal.
Epi-Lasik is relatively new and so it may take longer to find an eye surgeon who is experienced in the procedure. However, you may visit a couple of eye surgeons to determine who is best. Discuss the surgeon’s experience and their success rates. Make sure you understand the LASIK costs involved and what steps you will need to take before and after the eye surgery.
